The exhibition investigates a range of concepts, including possession and the search for elusive desires. Language and communication play an important role in Loboda ‘s work. The titles of the works and exhibitions are carefully chosen and help the visitor decipher the complexity of the narrative created by the artist.
“I always try to build the exhibition around a short story-a haiku so to speak-so that the works interact and stand next to each other.”
It is as if the artist is intent on writing and rewriting extraordinary stories, and then manipulating, distorting or dysfunctionalizing them so that they can come to life. In her works , Loboda uses a singular vocabulary that draws from a wide range of cultural influences, from antiquity to the present day.
The exhibition includes site-specific installations and new works created specifically for the spaces, as well as photographic works previously presented at the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art, in Warsaw, on the occasion of her first exhibition in Poland in 2019.
These photographs depict a person looking at the pages of a catalog under the sheets with the help of a flashlight. This clandestine pleasure becomes almost a sensual act, only in this scenario the object of desire is not an erotic magazine but a museum catalog of royal Korean celadon ceramics. The distinctive pale green hue of celadon ceramics was considered the color of transcendence, almost impossible to describe or reproduce. These ceramics were held in high esteem in the imperial courts because they were believed to have mystical properties, such as the ability to protect those who looked at them: their glaze would turn darker or shatter on contact with poisoned food.
Bruce Chatwin, of whom Loboda is an admirer, began his career as a catalog text writer in an auction house. His writings initiated the artist’s interest in the language of cataloging, which is both descriptive and seductive. This specific language is used to create a vivid image of the object in the mind of the reader who cannot see it in person. The artist confronts this ability to arouse attraction by placing objects to be observed from a distance within inaccessible rooms.

After learning that the gallery space had previously been an antique store, the artist used old furniture as part of the installation, juxtaposing it with new snake-shaped glass sculptures, “The Fanciers.” These enigmatic figures are like guardians of small ordinary items that they transform into elusive precious artifacts (Objets de Vertu). The snakes embody the dual role of guardians and creators of our fascinations.

VISTAMARE Gallery
Largo dei Frentani, 13
65127 Pescara
T+39 085 694570 – 085 4554401
info@vistamare.com

Opening Hours:
Monday 9:30am – 1:30pm
Tuesday – Friday 10am – 1:30pm | 3:30pm – 7:30pm

Cover Ph: Maria LOBODA

Luxembourg
CASINO LUXEMBOURG

Artiste(s)

David Bernstein, Stephen Korytko, Christine Sun Kim, Nicholas Vargelis, Jules Maillot

Curateur(s) : Charles Rouleau, Stilbé Schroeder

From 05.10.2024
To 21.04.2025

Une expérimentation curatorial

” Alors que nous étions à la recherche d’un titre pour ce projet, nous étions soudainement happé-e-s par le ” boogie “.
